Short answer: for everyday sketches and notes use ordinary graph paper (5 mm squares). Pick millimetre paper for exact technical drawings, isometric paper for 3D sketches, and a coordinate plane for maths homework. Every paper below is a free printable PDF in A4 and US Letter.
Grids
For drawing to scale, charts and maths.
Graph Paper
5 mm squares with a heavier line every centimetre. Best for: A plain grid for anything.
Millimeter Graph Paper
True 1 mm squares, darker every 5 mm and every centimetre. Best for: Exact millimetres for technical drawing.
2 mm Graph Paper
2 mm squares with a heavier line every centimetre. Best for: A fine grid for charts and sketches.
Coordinate Plane
A full-page grid with numbered x and y axes. Best for: X and Y axes for maths homework.
Lines
For notes, letters and music.
Lined Paper
College ruled lines with a margin. Best for: Everyday notes and letters.
Cornell Notes
A cue column, a notes column and a summary box. Best for: Lecture notes with a summary.

Isometric Dot Paper
Dots on a triangle grid, lighter than full lines. Best for: Light 3D sketches and bullet journals.
Polar Graph Paper
Rings and angle lines, labelled every 30 degrees. Best for: Circles, angles and polar plots.
Semi-Log Paper
Three log cycles up the side, even steps across. Best for: A log scale for science.
Thinking
For getting ideas onto paper.
Mind Map
A centre, six branches and twelve twigs. Best for: Brainstorming.
Printing tips
- Print at 100% / Actual size. “Fit to page” shrinks the squares, so 5 mm stops being 5 mm.
- Ordinary 80 g/m² copy paper is fine. For fountain pens or markers, 100–120 g/m² stops bleed-through.
- The lightest lines are pale on purpose so they fade under your writing. If a preview looks blank, print one page and look at the paper.
