Printing

Two settings decide whether the page comes out right. Both are in the print dialog, and both default to the wrong thing.

Print at actual size

Set scaling to 100% / Actual size, not “Fit to page”. Most printers default to fitting, which quietly shrinks the page by a few percent. The margins stop matching, and lines you meant to write on end up narrower than they should be.

The two settings

  1. Scale: 100% or “Actual size”. Never “Fit”, “Shrink to fit”, or “Scale to paper size”.
  2. Paper size: A4 or US Letter — pick the file that matches the paper in your tray. Both sizes are in every download.

Which paper

Double-sided pages

Choose flip on long edge for portrait pages. Flipping on the short edge turns every second page upside down.

On an iPad

Open the download in GoodNotes or Notability and import the PDF as a document. Where a file has month tabs, tapping one jumps to that month — the links are inside the PDF, so nothing needs to be online.

If a page looks blank in a preview

Some previewers do not draw very light rules. The dot grid and the lightest guide lines are deliberately pale so they disappear under your handwriting. Print one page and look at the paper before deciding.
